I have been literally using my fathers new monitor to have two split screens using my laptop. It's pretty neat and cool to begin with so why not try it out I say.
But I do say watching videos on my father's monitor is pretty horrid compared to watching on my laptop screen. It's due to all the glare the screen guess because I am looking from an angle so it's pretty bad but still the picture quality is also pretty bad if I do say.
I haven't been really satisfied with the monitor at all sometimes but It is still pretty cool to have a wider screen monitor to look at, it does look good when I play League Of Legends so there is no problem in gaming so far.
Programming too while watching a tutorial is pretty convenient so I can be watching and following right along with the tuts. So basically it works well for multiple tasking.
When I do get enough money for my gaming rig, I'll try to save up for a next monitor for split screening. After seeing it in action it makes me want to do it more often and maybe with three screens next time.
